Oulu is located in northern Finland, approximately 600 kilometres north of Helsinki.
Despite its northern location, the city is relatively easy to reach by plane, train or car.
Once you arrive, you will find that Oulu has a compact city centre, an extensive cycling network and public transportation connections to many surrounding neighbourhoods.
Flying to Oulu
Oulu Airport is located approximately 15 kilometres southwest of the city centre.
The airport offers domestic connections, including flights to Helsinki, making it possible for international visitors to reach Oulu through Finland’s main international airport.
From Oulu Airport, you can travel to the city centre by bus, taxi or rental car.
The journey generally takes around 20–30 minutes by car, depending on traffic conditions.
Travelling by Train
Travelling by train is a convenient way to reach Oulu from other Finnish cities.
Finnish railway operator VR provides services connecting Oulu with Helsinki, Tampere and destinations farther north, including Rovaniemi.
The journey from Helsinki to Oulu generally takes around five and a half to seven hours, depending on the train service.
Oulu railway station is centrally located, making it easy to reach many hotels and attractions.
Getting Around Oulu
Oulu has a local bus network connecting the city centre with residential areas, the airport and surrounding communities.
Route information, timetables and ticket options are available through the city’s public transportation services.
Walking is a pleasant way to explore the central area, particularly around the Market Square, Rotuaari and the waterfront.
Discover Oulu by Bicycle
Oulu is particularly well known for its extensive cycling network.
The city has dedicated cycling routes connecting many neighbourhoods, parks and recreational areas.
Cycling is popular throughout the year, although winter conditions require suitable equipment and additional care.
During summer, renting a bicycle is a wonderful way to explore Nallikari Beach and the surrounding coastline.
Do You Need a Car?
If you are mainly visiting central Oulu, you probably will not need a rental car.
However, a car can be useful if you want to explore smaller coastal communities, national parks or more remote natural attractions outside the city.
For a first visit, I recommend spending at least two or three days in Oulu. This gives you enough time to discover the city centre, enjoy the coastline and experience the relaxed atmosphere of northern Finland.
